| While the average age that the first tooth cuts through the gum is 6-9 months, it can occur as early as 3 months and as late as one year. There are a total of 20 baby teeth. They are usually all present by 3 years of age.
You can generally recognize the beginning of teething by some of the following signs:
- Increased drooling
- The desire to chew on things
- Mild gum swelling, redness and or tenderness
- Crying/mild irritability
Contrary to belief, the following things are not caused by teething:
- Diarrhea
- Diaper Rash
- Temperature over 101 degrees (38.3 Celsius)
- Colds
Helpful Hints:
- Gently massage baby’s gums with a cool dampened wash cloth. This will help new teeth come in and also strengthen gums.
- For added relief keep teething rings in the refrigerator. The cooling effect is extra soothing to baby’s gums.
- Use teething rings with stimulation bumps.
