What is “Colic”?

The word “colic” refers to periods of unexplained crying in infants between 2 weeks and 3 months of age.  These unexplained bouts of crying frequently occur in the evenings and usually lasts for 1-2 hours.  It is more difficult to console a colicky baby than a baby who is not.

The crying itself is harmless. It usually starts to improve by 2 months of age and resolves by around 3 months.  Approximately only 10-20% of babies are colic.

The exact cause of colic is unknown, but certain factors are thought to contribute to colic:

  • Overfeeding
  • Not enough burping
  • Immature stomach and or intestines
  • Immature nervous system
  • Over-excitement
  • Milk sensitivity

Helpful Hints:

  • Rock your baby in your arms or rocking chair
  • Play soothing music – for example, nature sounds or a lullaby
  • Stroll your baby in a stroller
  • Take your baby for a ride in the car (in a properly installed car seat)
